Laos Exploring Vieng Xai Caves

If you're visiting Sam Neau then a visit to Vieng Xai is a must, it's a very laid back place with a small village feel, there are no high rise buildings other than the enormous government building being constructed.

High on my priority list was to visit the cave complex, although there are some 400 caves in the region only a handful are open for visitors, to visit you must first get a ticket for the audio tour which is twice daily, the ticket office is located at N20.40186 E104.22743

Inside the ticket office is some useful information on the region and you are give a map to guide you, the tour should take you around 4 hours depending on group size.

Normally i'm not into the guided tourist stuff but the audio tour is brilliant and the english speaking guide that accompanies you is excellent.

Russian 4WD.

Air cleaner room is case of gas attack.

Valve system to ensure the room was air tight.

Pretty basic toilet set up.

Each cave had a substantial blast wall to each entrance, to prevent rocket attack.

Blasting holes, from when the cave was made.

Massive effort to construct these caves.

Air cleaning room and blast door valve configuration.

Well protected.

The last cave is the Artillery cave which is huge and boasts a concert hall.

Once outside there is a few war relics on display.

Underground concert stage

All in all a great very informative tour of just a few of the hundreds of caves in the area.
